When someone is experiencing emotion dysregulation they may have difficulty recognizing, expressing, and managing emotions. Often emotion dysregualtion causes significant emotional distress. The individual will feel their emotions intensely and will stay feeling activated by the emotion for a longer period of time than typical.

Other example of what a person experiencing emotion dysregulation can experience include:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Substance abuse

  • Being easily frustrated by small inconveniences or frustrations

  • Mood swings

  • Risky, impulsive, or unpredictable behavior

  • Disordered eating

  • Suicidal ideation

  • Self-harm

  • Emotions make it difficult to pursue your goals and achieve desired outcomes

    Emotion dysregulation can be incredibly painful for the individual experiencing it. With treatment many people learn to mange their symptoms.
